How can I Test Saffron For Purity?
A few simple tests could be useful to Ascertain Genuine Quality:
- Pure Saffron filament should impart yellow color to alcohol, ether, Chloroform, methanol and water, but not to benzone and xylem.
- Pure Saffron filaments should not leave any oily stain when its filaments are pressed between unglazed papers indicating the absence of added mineral/Vegetable oil.
- Presence of ash beyond 8% indicates added inorganic substance, which may be artificially colored.
